Hyundai / South Korea

Hyundai is one of South Korea’s leading department store chains. The brief for their new-build, 10-floor, 40,000m2 flagship store in Seoul’s fashionable Il-San Kintex suburb, was to blend the best of Asian and European retailing to create a point of difference for the chain.

HMKM’s response was to combine the clarity of layout and superlative customer service typical of South Asian department store retailing, with the distinctive style and personality of Europe’s best destination stores.

With responsibility for retail planning, interior architecture, brand frameworks, generic furniture and wayfinding across all floors, HMKM was able to establish a strong visual language throughout.

The service offer in this store is more extensive and tailored than is typical in the region. The eight-floor retail offer is complimented by it’s upper levels which house a cookery school with demonstration kitchens; an art gallery; a personal banking and internet space; a 200-seater auditorium for lecture, music performances or film screenings; as well as a ‘customer and cultural events’ space.
